Excellent Gasoline Saving Tips

submitted on January 17, 2011 by pablos17 in "Member's Lounge"
At a national average of $3.05 per gallon for regular unleaded, the price of gas has reached its highest level since the fall of 2008.

At that price, gasoline can weigh like an anvil on your monthly car expenses -- and Bankrate would like to help you save some cash at your next fill-up. Here are five ways to save at the pump so you won't go over budget every week when your car needs gas.

Maintain the Correct Tire Pressure
Don't Let Your Car 'Warm Up' Before You Drive It
Don't Use a Higher Grade of Gasoline Than Is Recommended

I use premium gasoline for my older car. It helps keep the injectors clean and for a few cents more per gallon, this is really cheap maintainence for keeping my car running smooth....249,000 miles on my Silver Bullet and still going runs like new! Big Grin

One more handy tip to add to your list: Consistently applying brakes on your car also tends to reduce the mileage especially if you are living in metros or need to travel to work daily with lots of traffic signals en route. I try to avoid braking as much as possible and have realized that it does make some difference in the long run. Big Grin

I try to get the junk out of my car but it keeps creeping back in & then I have to have a gas-guzzling van a tote an expensive scooter around! Maybe if I leave the kid on the sidewalk....just kidding! (Excuse the pun.)

You can use fuel perks from your grocery store card. They add up. If you wait long enough you can get a free tank!
Speedway also has a rewards card you can redeem for money off on gas. It's free, no credit card needed.

BP also has a pretty good rewards program in the form of a loyalty card:

    How do we say thanks?
With a $10 BP Reward Card, of course!

We want to do something a little special to thank you for supporting your local BP station. That's why we're offering you a $10 BP
Reward Card with every fifth fill up.*
Here's how to get your $10 BP Reward Card:

    * Purchase 8 gallons or more of any grade of BP fuel and
present your receipt to the on-site cashier to get a Loyalty Card.
    * Scratch the card to reveal a unique code.
    * Enter the code on this website.
    * Once you have filled up* 5 times and entered 5 Loyalty Card codes,
you will be mailed your $10 BP Reward Card in approximately
    4-6 weeks. It's that easy.

I must say the car pooling thing has worked out well for me. I drive a couple of co-workers in each day and have been doing so for almost a year now. I don't have to pay for parking any longer ($120 / month -big ouch) and get some extra gas money from them ever so often. I wish more people would practice the same so that traffic wouldn't be such a pain.
