Dollar General vs. Walmart--Price Comparisons on 10 Standard Grocery Items

submitted on January 10, 2011 by jack69darin in "Stores / Merchants"
Dollar General is planning on opening 625 new stores this year. Added to the 9,200 stores currently in operation, we wonder if Walmart should be looking over its shoulder. The following Dollar General vs. Walmart price comparisons are taken from Walmart's online shopping website and random Dollar General stores.

We picked 10 grocery items that a family might buy on a regular basis and compared them to regular store prices. Please note that prices will vary from region to region, based on market need and a particular store's overhead costs.

See 10 comparisons.

I do love Dollar General. It's a minute from my house, and prices are cheap, and you don't have to wait in line forever like Wal-Mart. Also smaller store with less temptation to impulse buy.

Interesting comparison and a very small sample, but who amongst us buys entirely brand name items like the 10 listed there? Be better to see all store brand and value brand comparisons listed too.

Since I'm at the grocery store first, I like comparing their prices with discount store groceries and if the price is right, why waste gas to save a few dollars. Too much risk driving around, especially in unforeseen weather conditions.
