Do you change your car's oil every 3,000 miles? Perhaps you shouldn't.

submitted on September 13, 2010 by pablos17 in "Member's Lounge"
“There was a time when the 3,000 miles was a good guideline,” said Philip Reed, senior consumer advice editor for the car site Edmunds.com. “But it’s no longer true for any car bought in the last seven or eight years.”

Oil chemistry and engine technology have improved to the point that most cars can go several thousand more miles before changing the oil, Mr. Reed said. A better average, he said, would be 7,500 between oil changes, and sometimes up to 10,000 miles or more.

Here is my dilemma... The oil that I use for my car needs to be changed every 5,000 miles.....But it might take me about 2 years to put 5,000 on my car... (I dont drive much) .. SO the question is do I change the oil every 2 years...?

I would recommend against waiting that long before changing the oil.

I have to change my oil every 3,000 miles or my warranty is void. Based on the amount I drive, that's about every 6 months so I don't mind it too much. That being said, it's probably more often than I need to do it but I feel safer that my car has it's regular maintenance and is checked out every so often.

Using synthetic oil I change about every 7-8000 miles. Highly recommend changing the filter out halfway though. Also remember to check the dip stick occasionally.

I change oil every 5K on my car and sometimes go as long as a year between the changes. The car is 13 years old now and I never had any problem with the engine or transmission.

I like my wife's new car in that it has a oil life percentage and the dealer told us to not change the oil until it's at less than 20% of its oil life.

Mine just has a "maintenance" light that comes on after 5,000 miles and starts flashing after 7,500 miles. You need to reset it after you change oil but the guys at the shop often do it for you.
