Do Gift Card Laws apply to GROUPONS too?

Do Gift Card Laws Keep My Groupons From Expiring?
By MB Quirk on January 25, 2011 11:30 AM

As Groupon continues to expand across the country into more and more markets, consumers are finding they're not quite sure how to deal with this new beast when it comes to state laws governing coupons and gift certificates.

Consumerist reader James M. wrote in to bring up that in some states, gift cards and certificates can't actually expire, even if, as with most Groupons, there is an expiration date written on them. He wants to know, "Do Groupons (and similar offers) fall under this clause?"

Ooops, it seems to me Groupon offers have expiration dates showing at the time you purchase the offer.

I just offered a Groupon for the restaurant I run this past Sunday (we sold 503 Big Grin ) I like the fact that it does expire so I can measure the additional traffic I am receiving in a given amount of time.

That helps, plus hopefully increases business within the allotted time frame.

Wow! Did you really? How did the sale go? Are you seeing the new customers yet? I read that many businesses are not very happy with how their Groupon sales turn out at the end

      Sorry about the delayed response.
      1)Seeing a few new customers
2)Have had a few people print their groupon more than once and try to use it multiple times.
3)My staff hates it because no one seems to be tipping on the full amount of their check (a $20 check that gets discounted to $5, and the customer leaves $2 as a tip.)
4)I would not do this again Sad

That's disappointing! Sorry to hear that roxy! But hopefully more new customers will come and then continue to return.

I lost email from Homerun w/$50 gift card I purhcased for a popular home gift store I can't think of the name of right now, they always have the $10 off $30 w/your account?? I pd. $25 for it. They had NO record that I ever bought & when my computer sputtered & died I lost all email & stupidly didn't print it out. Homerun wouldn't even tell me what date they ran the offer to have specialist try to pull from old hard drive so I was out my $50 g.c. & I think it expired 12/31. Now I make sure to save in specified file & run hard copy of code & file also!!!
