Do Frugal Shoppers Buy Lottery Tickets? (Take a Poll)

submitted on March 30, 2012 by HouTex in "Sales / Promotions", last updated on March 31, 2012 by HouTex
That question popped into my mind as I watch more and more people stand in long lines to buy lottery tickets for a record $640 million Mega Millions jackpot. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-20.....0-million/
The drawing will be held at 11 pm ET today (3/30/12), and if there's no winner, the jackpot would increase to an estimated $975 million for the next drawing on Tuesday, April 3, 2012. Eeek Update - Winning tickets were sold!

Some people claim to have a system that guarantees they will win, see this previous topic about a 7-time "serial" lottery winner who shared his secrets http://www.buxr.com/topic/seri.....times_3839 , but I'm skeptical that would work for me and never buy them. I can't bring myself to blow the money on lottery tickets, although sales have tripled on this one as the size of the prize keeps going up. The odds of winning this jackpot are about one in 176 million, and I'm more interested in "sure" ways to save.

Am I a typical frugal shopper, or do you disagree with my view?
1. Have you ever bought a lottery ticket?
 Yes
 No
2. Have you ever won a lottery (any amount)?
 Yes
 No
3. What would make you buy a lottery ticket?
 When I have extra cash
 When the jackpot is big
 Impulse buy at the register
Nothing, I would NEVER buy a lottery ticket!

The "American Dream" my friend.....that is why I buy when the jackpot is big. I will buy an Irish Pub and Bed & Breakfast in Asheville. Cool Unfortunately we can't buy the "Big One" here in Florida.

I've never bought a lottery ticket for myself and I've never been to a casino. I will be going to a casino when I'm on vacation this year, still wondering if I can enjoy gambling money on chance. I have purchased lottery tickets for a friend in another state. I also have been given lottery tickets a few times.

I picked up $10 worth today for the mega. I use to have a method, but just do quick picks now, easier to do!

    Update from CNN:
Maryland lottery officials say a ticket purchased in Baltimore County hit the $640 million Mega Millions jackpot.

The winning Mega Millions numbers were 2, 4, 23, 38, 46 with a Mega Ball of 23. The multistate jackpot has grown to become the largest ever offered that could be won by an individual.

A California Lottery Commission spokesman said 29 tickets sold in that state matched five of the six winning numbers.

    Great topic, HouTex!

I think the first question makes no sense though. I am pretty sure everyone at some point in their life bought a ticket. I did when I was a child (out of curiosity) but now I never do.

What would really be interesting to see instead is how many buy lottery regularly.

Thanks, Yan! I like your suggestion and updated the first question, hoping that more people will take the poll. Now that we know there were 3 winning tickets sold (see http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-50.....kets-sold/ ), I'm also curious about them, and wonder if those people each bought only one or many tickets. I'm guessing that most people bought multiple tickets for this one. Here in Houston, people flocked to a particular store that had previously sold winning tickets, thinking it was a "lucky" store.
Americans spent nearly $1.5 billion for a chance to hit the jackpot in this lottery.

According to Illinois lottery officials, a winning ticket was sold in the small town of Red Bud, near St. Louis, and the winner used a quick pick to select the numbers.

Maryland's was sold at a 7-11 in Baltimore County, state lottery officials said.

A winning ticket also was purchased in northeast Kansas.

BTW, only half the money collected goes to the winner, the other half stays in Washington state - http://www.keprtv.com/home/vid.....51625.html

You shouldn't update the question, it invalidates the answers already given. I answered as yes, but I do not buy lottery regularly.

Thanks for the poll, HouTex! Topics discussions and polls have been pretty skimpy lately. Part of the fun on Buxr is seeing all the discussion topics because...
    1. You get to learn a little about everyone here based on what they're topics are and their responses and
    2. You learn fun and interesting things and
    3. Polls are fun!! Artistic

Yes, I play Lotto by Mail. I rarely buy a ticket from a cashier because of all the problems that can happen.

In Illinois, you can "subscribe" to Lotto By Mail. It's designed for regular players who tend to play the same numbers.

You "subscribe" for a term, a minimum of 3-months to a maximum of 1 year.

I usually play the same 10 lines of numbers every 3 months (for every drawing) along with an extra 2 lines of quick picks that change every 3 months.

    Yes, I'm hooked, lol. Smile

I always win several times each 3-month period. I usually get a bunch of 3 out of 6 number wins ($3 each) and several 4 out of 6 number wins ($25-$50 each.)

I always win some of my money back. But even if you don't win, about half the $$$ from the ticket prices goes to educational programs and charities. So, the money isn't really "wasted" or "gone down the drain."

    I haven't won a major jackpot...yet.

But I know I will one day, lol. Smile

I bought 3 tickets last week since the jackpot was so high. First time I had played in over 10 years.
