Daily Deal Voting

submitted on August 16, 2012 by siggy38 in "Buxr Website / Contests"
This is just my opinion based on my observation over the past few weeks. It would appear to me that a lot of deal votes are based on who posted the deal and not the quality of the deal. An example would a 20% off coupon with more votes verses a 40% off coupon when the 40% off is obviously the better one.

Or sometimes when a deal gets near the top of the list for the day (or in the 23rd hour) the vote count really climbs fast. Confused

Maybe I'm wrong about this, but again it is just my opinion.

Happy voting everyone! Wink Big Grin
1. Do you vote based on deal quality?

Agreed. One of the reasons I stopped posting deals. Seems like people just vote for people that voted for them...regardless of the deal. I could post a great deal, and get no votes purely because I didn't vote on someone else's deal.

You can stop submitting deals, I just hope you don't stop your deal votes, or rather I hope you didn't stop your votes.

I still occasionally vote on good deals...not as much as a couple years ago.

I still think names should be hidden when a deal is submitted.

i like the anonymity suggestion a lot! i am relatively new at posting around here, but this sounds more "fair". i dont think i realized some of these "things" have been going on until i read the newer thread on this subject.

these two theads have been interesting reading!

in general, i do try to vote on the quality of the deal AND on the deals that i myself will or would use. for example, if someone posts a restaurant deal and that restaurant is not in my area, i may not vote for it....same thing for an in store deal. if i cannot use it i probably wont vote for it.

It SHOULD be based on deal quality, irregardless as to who the poster. We should vote on the deal itself....this shouldn't be a popularity contest.

This is one of the reasons I don't come as frequently as I used to and stopped using the site.

Users would game the contest and just vote up every deal and every comment to earn points. There was no regard to quality.

Solstice, I haven't had the privilege of one of your rants in years, please construct a lengthy comment. Some of the newbies have never gotten to experience it since they signed on and were a mod, let us enjoy the old days, before the gaming of the site began and give us a Solstice response.

Nah, I broke myself of the ranting habit awhile back. Sorry to dissappoint.

However, having been a mod at one point and seen things from both sides of the fence, I can safely say that it is very difficult to "game" the system with any real effectivness with the way the contests and point system is currently set up.

Yeah, I could do a lengthy novella of a comment and go into way too much detail, but its not needed. In my less than humble opinion, there is no tangible problem, and I would say the system is now actually better than in the days of old.

This has been mentioned in other threads and ONCE AGAIN in this thread: ANONYMITY.

I totally agree with deathbynosleep's comment about leaving out the names when posting deals.

I have seen a few deals where the top was completely blanked out, including the name.
I didn't know if it was a glitch, related to my using a MSNTV2 unit instead of a computer, or if this is a new option. ???

Perfect example of what I'm talking about, 25% off is better than 30% off. Really!!
25% off with (6) votes in (18) hours

30% off with (2) votes in (24) hours

Laaya, it's called selfishness & cheating. I've noticed it too.

Now, if she picked all the winners AND others, that would be one thing.

But she usually seems to get mainly the winners at the last minute, AS IF SOMEONE ELSE has logged into her account & voted for her.

HOWEVER, I HAVE noticed ONE and ONLY ONE person she often votes for at the bottom: Debsfreebies.

      Confused

PSPLOVE, I'll agree with you on that. It appears you have been recently been blacklisted and a lot of people have stopped voting for your deals. Some people only vote at the end (or when you hit a certain # of votes) when it appears you may win.

PSPLOVE, That is not entirely true.

I used to vote on most of your deals. But did you vote on mine? NO! Not unless there was a good chance they were going to win.

And again, I didn't notice you doing any voting for anyone who had less than about 12 votes on their deals-except DebsFreebies.

      I'm starting to think you
      ARE DEBSFREEBIES !!!

Or at least a close relative of hers.

I don't know, I haven't been here long enough. Does anyone think that's a possibility? Eeek

Ok, back to why some deals that appear to be lower in value get more votes than other deals that appear to be higher in value...

Since I last posted about anonymity, I realized there are other factors that come into play besides who posted the deal.

    Such as:

*Running out of votes. - I just voted and ran out of votes even though there are more great deals that I want to vote on. Now a lot of those deals will probably get lost/old before I can vote again.
*There should be some sort of counter. You know-like when you're posting that alerts you when you are running low on votes. Idea

*Many people are lazy/tired/short on time and don't bother to look beyond the main page.

*The time/day that the deal is submitted can affect the number of votes it receives.

*The default is set to "activity" not "recency." I noticed that and have to constantly keep setting it back to "recency" if I want to find the newer deals, especially when there is heavy posting. If not, then the new deals don't get as much attention and I miss some.

*Not being here all the freakin' time. - Sorry, but I can't be here as much as some of you and vice-versa.
I haven't been here in a couple of days because of work and by the end of the day, I completely forgot about this site, LOL. Now I probably missed a lot of great deals and may have just voted on some that weren't as good as the ones I missed. Sorry, but I don't have the time (or desire) to go back several days. And it wouldn't matter anyway even if I did because votes don't count after 24 hours.
-Take Siggy's 30% deal, for example. I don't know whether I was here for Siggy's deal or not and whether or not I had available votes, but since I usually vote for most of the Redcats' sites good deals, I would have normally voted for hers. So, it looks like I wasn't and/or didn't.
However, if you notice, since Siggy brought this matter up w/ the link, her votes have doubled (I voted for it as well.) So, obviously people DO think it's a good deal. It's just that probably for any of the reasons mentioned above, it initially did not get a lot of attention.

Sooooooo, don't take it personally, people.
Well, except you PSPLOVE, you CAN take it personally. LOL Smile

Are you talking about this posting you made for The Endangered Species Coloring Book?

      http://www.buxr.com/deal/free-.....ook_128888

That is considered a "Freebie" - or Free Giveaway where you get something TOTALLY FREE without having to buy ANYTHING else.

Freebies do not make the site any money, so that is why they are given only $5 when they win.

When I activate a deal it depends on how much time I have to do it and how complicated the deal is. If a deal is easy to check out with the promo code being able to submit before going to the checkout then It helps. i hope that helps out.
