Daily & Contest Deals

submitted on September 27, 2011 by psplove in "Buxr Website / Contests"
As yesterday! I am so sad about the daily and contest. I start getting unfair with this web site Buxr.com

Even my deal is more Popularity with 4 star. I don't know each one of you have this feeling or not. If you do, please leave comments here.

Thank You!

I see things that I feel are unfair sometimes. I also see that this is a contest, some people only vote on deals that are at the top of the board, some people only vote on deals that won't beat their deal, some people vote on deals by who posted the deal, some people vote on every deal no matter whether it is good or not... and the popularity factor some times doesn't match what happens with a deal. I've seen deals with three or four votes and four star popularity that never progress for some reason on the board. If you want fair the incentives for posting would have to disappear and people would need to vote in a fashion that reflects the deal and nothing else and since we all have our ideas of good it's never going to be completely fair. I am sorry you felt like your deal wasn't treated fairly and I'm sure many of us have felt that way at times.

I say remove the name of the person from the deal. Just remove it. Deal is a deal, does not have to be submitted with the name. If a question is asked in the comments - anyone can answer it. At the end of the day - you will find out who submitted. simple.

This question about the popularity indicator came up last year in this topic - http://www.buxr.com/topic/popu.....nking_3047

Yan can explain it much better than I can, so here is what he posted on that topic -
Popularity star ranking is calculated based on the internal metrics we collect for each deal and reflects how popular the deal is with Buxr shoppers. The metrics are things like number of page views the deal page receives, number of deal alerts the deal submission triggers, number of times visitors click on the deal link to check it out, etc.

We do not simply add up the metrics, we also use time to calculate the intensity. So in theory, a deal can get 4 stars in the first 2 hours and then fall back to 3 or 2 stars as the interest subsides.

And the last, we keep experimenting with the formula. It has changed in the past and there is a chance it will change again in the future as we collect more metrics or discover more ways to help you spot popular deals.

If I understand this correctly, the popularity and the votes are not at all related. They are measuring a completely different thing. Many visitors to Buxr may click on your deal to view it, but only members can vote. Often I see deals that are more popular with visitors than with members. For example, all freebies seem to be very popular with visitors no matter how few votes they get.

I would hope that you are participating for the fun and community as well as the prizes. I would guess that most of the active members really enjoy finding and sharing deals. That is certainly what brought me to Buxr in the first place. It's worthwhile for me because I've saved so much money with the deals that are posted here, and appreciate how our members keep finding interesting and valuable offers.

That explains my Jell-O "Brain Mold deal. I couldn't figure out how I had so little votes but 4 yellow stars. Thanks for posting the explanation HouTex. You made it very easy to understand. It has to do with non-members taking advantage of Buxr and clicking on the deals.

Well, you were really close to winning with that deal, psplove. You actually had a tie with siggy38 and CouponNut, and the only reason they were awarded instead is because they gained more votes with their other deals on that day (this is how we resolve ties). So, things are not completely broken! Wink

Buxr was built with a simple premise in mind, to try to monetarily award people who find and share hot deals and discounts. We use votes to measure the 'hottness' since this is what many communities do when they have to decide on something.

Now, I agree that things are not perfect, they never are, but we are doing our best to make them as close to 'perfect' as we can, and we are always open to your suggestions on how we can make Buxr a better place for everyone.

So if you do think something is not fair, don't just complain, think about what could be changed to resolve the unfairness. You did suggest in the past, and we did make changes, a lot of them. And we will do it again...

      Hi, Yan.

I have question about $5 bonus. How many deals do I need to posted to get $5 bonus each day? As I am not a "Power user" I can only post 10 deals each day.

      Thanks!

The member who earns the most votes with his/her deals is the one who collects the bonus. He/she could have less deals and still get the bonus (say if each of those deals has many votes).

Basically at the end of the contest period we add up all the votes your deals collect and compare them with all other members who submitted deals in the same daily contest. If your deals collect more votes than anyone else's then you get the bonus.

Lets see how the meter works for one of most popular games (available for free) and the other one of the hottest items for this year.

Sometimes I think it would be better to remove the poster's name and simply show the deal. HOWEVER....even if that happened, most of us would still know who posted it by the way the deal is listed, the deal itself by the store, etc. Another thing to consider is reputation. While Buxr does its best to ensure that all deals are accurate, some do get missed. When you see a particular poster's name by a deal, you learn to trust that person's deal.

It's funny how we (all of us, me too) only think things are not fair when they affect our own deals. Fairness is really a way of thinking...what IS fair is that the visitors to Buxr as well as our own community get to participate in helping others and ourselves save a lot of money. The contest and our wins should be secondary.

    Just my two cents.
