Class-Action Lawsuit Against Scholastic Corporation
There is class-action lawsuit against Scholastic Corporation by consumers who felt "harassed, deceived, intimidated, and threatened" when they tried to cancel membership.
Scholastic Corporation uses negative option billing, a business practice in which goods or services are provided automatically, and the customer must either pay for the service or specifically decline it in advance of billing. This is the model on which mail order services, such as book clubs, are structured.
This type of complaint has been common with recent diet supplement "free trial" offers. Quite often delivery of the "free" item is delayed to the point that customers are unable to reach the company before the first billing in order to cancel.
