Carrier IQ: Researcher Trevor Eckhart Outs Creepy, Hidden App Installed On Smartphones (VIDEO)

submitted on November 30, 2011 by orangearrows in "Products / Gadgets"
This is scary and the security apps you install on your phone ( lookout etc. ) do nada to weed them out.

A security researcher has posted a video detailing hidden software installed on smart phones that logs numerous details about users' activities.

In a 17-minute video posted Monday on YouTube, Trevor Eckhart shows how the software – known as Carrier IQ – logs every text message, Google search and phone number typed on a wide variety of smart phones - including HTC, Blackberry, Nokia and others - and reports them to the mobile phone carrier.

I see people starting to talk about it now. This is an invasion of privacy and all users must be given an option to opt out of it if we like. At least asked if we want to opt in and not in it by default.

Trying to remove it from my E4gT and I have to go through a lot to remove this thing.

Note: it does record keystrokes. Also it does know when you logged into your bank account and what text messages you send, even the content of it. Carrier IQ has denied recording keystrokes but the above video shows that they do.

Sprint and ATT have agreed that they use it

Verizon and Nokia have denied using it.

It has been actively found on Samsung and HTC phones.
