Reading a recent article it said that even during hard times people will still continue to pay higher prices for their pets instead of switching to a cheaper food. I will cut down on other things so I don't have to change my pet's food.

When you buy better food for your pet(s), you actually save in the long run because they are healthier. We try instead to get the better products at the cheapest price with coupons and sales as often as possible, but we don't ever buy the cheaper products just to save money. Regular preventive vet visits help us avoid any problems that may require expensive treatments later.
