Buxr discussion board posting guidelines Permalink

As the number of topics posted daily grows it gets more important to follow these guidelines so we can all enjoy the flow of useful information and make sure valuable bits don't get lost.

The primary purpose of the board is to share shopping/retail/consumer/money related news and also post questions about Buxr. This is also perfect place for members to get to know each other.

There are a few things that should not be posted. They are:

1. Shopping deals - do not post coupons, deals, promotions, and freebie. These belong to our deals page since over there they get better exposure and are easier to find. Even limited availability deals should go to the deals page. Just make sure you list the states and mention "Select States" in the title. One state/city deals? You probably don't want to share a deal like that since it is not likely to get many votes and is of limited value.

There are a few exceptions:

a) YMMV deals that are very hard or impossible to verify are OK to be posted in the discussion board
b) Recurring codes - always post these in the dedicated threads

c) CVS and Walgreens weekly in-store deal round-ups are OK too

2. Offbeat news - do not post weird, odd, strange, funny, crazy etc news or videos. There are plenty of other places online to get these in great quantities.

3. Absolutely no copying of other news articles! Describe the news/question/problem in your own words. Use the “quote” button if you need to quote another source but don't quote more than a few lines and always link back to the source.

    You say do not post coupons, deals, promotion etc.

    What about the short lived ones like the one from dr oz and limited ones like only 300 at a certain time.

    I don't think those really belong on the deals page. they go quickly.

    Do we just not share them anymore?

    Might I suggest that admins be empowered to reject discussion threads; that would delete them (or render them invisible) and send a message to the poster: discussion deleted for this reason, see the wiki.
    More complicated programming, but maybe this could be a community task (three users or a power user can vote to delete an discussion).

      Better (?) idea. Make the member's lounge a sub-forum. Real stuff available on the front discussion page, other "junk" available on the back end.

      Actually we are not sending an email for rejected discussion topics. Here is how it currently works. As admins deactivate a topic, it will still be in the common list but it will have red background. At this point only you and admins will be able to read it and commenting will still be open (we will comment about what we think is wrong with it and you can comment back). As the rejection is finalized, the thread will completely go away.

      Keeping "Members Lounge" separate is a good idea and I have already given it a fair amount of thought. I think at this point as still prefer to keep everything together, partly because the board is still not very busy. This may change in the future though.

    What about referral links? I submitted a deal recently that has a referral link because it makes the price $5 cheaper. If is flagged right now (I think because of that). Should we put a lain link in the deal and then leave a comment about a referral link if it makes the deal cheaper?

      Most likely the answer would be "no", as we generally frown upon S&S offers in product posts.

      However, without a specific example of what you would post, I cannot definitively say one way or the other. It is possibly that special offer or sale exclusive to S&S may be cleared, but once again, we would have to look at its specific details to really answer that in any particular case.

      "Shop and Save" by Amazon requires paid membership, isn't it? I think this restriction rules out the possibility of the offer becoming a hit on Buxr since it limits who can participate. So I would think twice before posting it.

      That said, if you think you stumbled upon a really good S&S deal, feel free to submit it but make sure to disclose the requirement right in the deal title as it is a major restriction and needs to be where it can be seen right away.

      The same applies to other deals requiring paid memberships.

      Not not paid but recurring. And you ca stop future shipments anytime. I personally use it a lot. Its like costco with no lines.

    The only problem for me with the rules of no shopping deals in discussions. is that i am only allowed a limited number of posts. I like to share short lived, hot deals with everyone on Buxr. How would i go about doing that without using up my submissions, and or deal off?

      Climb up the ranks Smile You're well on your way, so keep up the great deals you have been posting and some point in the future, you might very well gain power user status which will allow you to post more deals.

    Ok, so I am just wanting clarification... what kind of news stories are ok to post? I would take this rule as only financial related news stories. Is that correct?

    What I am trying to do is keep us just a bit focused around our common interests. These would be things like: shopping, retail, consumer, finance, saving money, budgeting, etc.

    @Admins...I tried posting a freebie this morning and did a clear search of all topics with the name, Company and deal and nothing showed up. When I posted it, I got a duplicate deal. Is it because the previous posting was over a certain period of time that it didn't show up? Thanks for your help!

      Clover, when you do a search make sure that you are also showing expired deals too. On the "Hot Deals" tab this is located on the right side of the page under "Customize The View." I believe the default setting is to hide all expired deals.

      Welcome clover, and thanks for participating. Freebie submissions can not be duplicated, no matter how old the previous one was.

      When looking to post a freebie, search and then search older deals as mentioned below. If you have just signed up or received a freebie and you find an old listing, add a comment to that older listing that says it is still available. That bumps the listing to the top of the queue for people who view their deal pages by Activity, letting more people know the freebie is (still) out there.

      From the wiki:
      No duplicate freebie submissions allowed regardless of the time when the previous submission was made or whether it was previously expired. This includes online free product requests and coupons that enable you to receive a product for free in-store. Before you submit a freebie, search the deals and make sure you click on 'Search older deals' link that appears at the bottom of search results.

      Hi clover, and welcome to Buxr! To add just a little bit more to equipurple's suggestion, the link to "search older deals" is on the right side of the page under the search option after the initial results are shown. So if you make one more step to click that link, you can often find a few more matches for your search.

    Are recalls still allowed to be posted? I know it's off topic but I use Buxr as my main news source sadly. I don't have a ton of time and filtering through news websites can be very time consuming. I've always loved the discussion boards here at Buxr for that reason. A very wide variety of interesting things get posted that I probably wouldn't have read. My main concern though is if national recalls are no longer posted here that I will have to start paying more attention which I do anyway but it's nice to know if I missed one that I will find it here.     I would like to stress again, as this is very important. Do not copy/paste your posts from other sources. Describe the news in your own words. You can copy/paste a few lines after your own introduction. If you do so, always link back to the source.

    Not only copying content is illegal, Google recently changed search algorithms to penalize websites with copied content so they do not show up in search results. It would be a very sad day for us if Google were to penalize Buxr since many people would not be able find our community via search

      It is open to power users only (in the same way only power users can see rejected deals). I think opening it up to every single member is a bit too much since only a small fraction of registered Buxr users ever post deals/topics and the tab would only take space there.

    Why bother having a members lounge if it can not be used to share fun news or videos? I know haven't been active in a while, but this was one thing I liked about the site. Sure there are plenty of other places for us to share videos and fun off beat news stories. But those places have something missing and that is each other.

    In the past, I have seen many fun stories and videos posted here that I hadn't seen any where else. I really wish you would rethink this decision not to allow non shopping news and videos.

    So glad someone finally spoke up on this issue.

    I use to check discussions every day and now I click here only once in a while.

    Discussions board has lost it's flavor imo.

    But in all seriousness. Ever since we all joined, it was my impression that along with a deal site that there was a social networking feature to this site to build a "community" feel. This censorship of what most of us found amusing hurts that.

    Secondly, I am with you about off contest, but I think my stance on the contest has been well documented over the years. I have long been against receiving points for discussion posts and comment mark ups. I think that ruined the site for me and hence I have not been active for almost a year. (Not that I think anyone even noticed that I disappeared) Points for voting up comments led to my belief that you could not "game" the site and I didn't want to be apart of that. It was fun to post deals and win the contest, but it became a chore to go in a vote everything positive. Furthermore god forbid you actually thought something truly deserved a negative, you were outcast and raked over the coals for voicing your opinion.

    Ok I am off my soapbox for now.

    With that being said, it is good to be back in a limited capacity for now. I don't know how long I will be here, but I am but for now Big Grin .

      I am new since January. I like your thoughts. I like this site! I love the comradery. My opinions might not mean as much because of my short time on Buxr but I have tried to add some humor in the the discussions. It might not always have been appreciated but...! I also try to add some humor to the posted deals. To see the same deals posted without some commentary is boring and what else can I say!

    Here is what we could do to keep these discussions going:
    1. Let topics from "Other" category (and comments to them) be posted off contest
    2. Hide them by default and only show when you enable "Show: All Topics" on a sidebar (similar to how we currently hide expired deals)

    What do you think? Would this work?

      I will work on the two items I listed in my previous comment. Once in place the restrictions regarding #2 (offbeat news) will be lifted. For now the things stay the way they are. I will keep you informed

    Some times I have found some deals those are in store , without any proof or advertisement. I would like to post it here in discussion but should I generate each time a new topic or is there any common topic , where I can submit those?
