Burn Blu-ray Disks on Regular DVDs

submitted on April 27, 2010 by MrCheap in "Products / Gadgets"
I am still trying to make sense of the news but so far it looks like you can just burn an HD movie on a regular DVD and most Blu-ray DVD players should be able to play it

The developers of the open source h.264 codec x264 have just released an update that makes it possible to burn Blu-ray discs on regular DVD-9 or even DVD-5 DVD-Rs. x264 uses advanced compression to fit Blu-ray movies on much cheaper DVD-Rs “with a reasonable level of quality,” according to yesterday’s announcement. Most players will treat these discs like a regular Blu-ray disc.

I'm thinking “with a reasonable level of quality” may be an understatement....

If they come out looking like a guy recorded it in a movie theater, I'm not sure what kind of benefit that would be. I would have to see the result before even considering wasting a disc.

Does reasonable level of quality = much better then DVD quality?

I mean what is the point most Blu Ray players already play DVDs and up-convert them as well.
