As part of the Chapter 11 process, Borders will close 30% of its 642 stores, or about 200 that it identifies as underperforming. The bookseller operated twice that many at its peak in 2003.
An S&P Equity Research analyst calls Borders’ bankruptcy a “huge boon” for Barnes & Noble. The rival bookseller stands to benefit from the filing, both in sales and buying power with vendors.
I buy books at Half.com and only if there is a book I need to have on the shelf as a reference (or want to read it more than once). I can pretty much get anything else I need in the library
Borders stores are open for business Rewards programs remain in effect Borders.com is operating as usual Borders will maintain its strong national presence They expect to build their core strengths over the next several months
I prefer to take my son to borders (which is 3 mins away) to purchase his books. We have fun, playing with the toys, reading the books, then go to the cafe for a treat. I hope mine doesn't close.
It has just been announced that they plan on closing another 27 stores:
