Birthday Ideas - The Big 18! Permalink

My son will be turning 18 pretty soon and I want to do something large, different for this milestone Birthday.

He still is in school so nothing extravagent like a cruise or anything like that.

I was kind of leaning towards paying for him to go to a concert in another city.

Can't think of much else...

looking for ideas. Something fun and cool for a teenage kid to do.

    If he has a girlfriend (or even a close friend) you might think about filling the car up with gas, giving him $100 and rent him a motel room for the night. Doesn't matter what your kid is in to.....they all love to drive and eat at that age Smile

    That's an interesting idea. I'd have to look into that motel thing. Being that he'd just barely be turning 18 and doesn't look it, I'm wondering if the hotel would even rent a room to him and a room of teens.

    I could spring for pizza, load them up with junk food and sodas and make sure the hotel has a heated pool.

      If you booked the room and told them it was for your 18 yr old, they'd rent it.

    Scavenger hunts are always fun. Depending on the kind of time you have to dedicate to the planning, you can have an inexpensive, one-of-a-kind event that can end at a fun destination (I don't know where abouts you are) like a bowling alley, the beach, etc.

    I can't see booking a hotel room for an 18 year old and his friends. There would probably be the risk of someone bringing alcohol. Some of the kids drink and then drive home. Who is responsible if one of them gets in an accident? How about a bowling party with pizza and some gift cards or something for the high scores? You could make it a "theme" party where they would have to dress up. It could be fun.

      I can agree with the alcohol issue but some kids are going to do that anyway, even "good" kids. So, why not have them do it in a safe place where no one drives?

      I would worry more about if girlfriends show up. Young adults are not always the most responsible when it comes to protection. Having that feeling of not getting caught because there are no adults is enough to make any person that age dumb.

      I'll try to help brainstorm for ya. I'm bound to come up with something eventually.

      Lol. With these ideas I take out the parts that just aint gonna happen.

      If we were to go with the hotel idea, no girls, no car, no booze.

      The bowling party seems kind of juvenile to me. We had one of those when he was younger.

      He really has his heart set on the concert though. it's with friends, some group he likes but it's in another city not so close and ends late a night. That doesn't sit well with me. The concert is before his actual birthday so he'd still be a juvenile. So obviously there's issues with that.

      I was wondering if there's something game related. He LOVES to play games online and on weekends is up all night doing just that.

      I don't want anything like murder/mystery or yugioh tournaments and such. don't even know if something game related as a BD idea exists...

      I kind of want this to be related to his turning 18. Something he's now allowed to do without restriction because of age.

      Nothing that promotes having grandchildren, drinking, drugs, etc. or will get him a record.

      This is why I'm having such a hard time with this cause I want this day to be unlike others and somehow tied into the fact that you're an adult now.

      Tell him where the nearest x-rated store is and give him some money and swear to not search the bags lol. No that's a horrible idea, at least til he moves out.

      What kind of games does he play online? If it's a game like Warcraft you could try to set up a raid for him in a dungeon he likes but that doesn't really go with the 18 thing.

      The only things I remember being able to do once I turned 18 were buy cigarettes, buy porn, be out after city curfew, and buy white out.

      I've never played WOW so this idea doesn't mean anything to me.

      Is this something special you pay for online and he does this from home?

      Is it something that ends in a half hour or less or once he's killed it's over?

      Maybe if they have something like Blizzcon.

      Maybe I'm looking for something that doesn't exist....lol

      It's basically just a group of people that play together and try to accomplish something that is impossible alone. It's typically hard to get a good group together when you want to so unless he has a friend that you could talk into helping you then it's probably out of the question. It normally takes several hours to go on a raid but it's pretty fun. Of course this only would work if he plays a game like that already.

      Hmmm. I'll look into this. He has a following of friends he regularly plays games with. They sit there and chat, scheme and stuff.
      I know he really gets into these games and sometimes they're real intense cause I can hear him scream or laugh at times from his room.

      I'll talk to one of his friends and see whats up with this raid thing. Maybe he can do this in addition to any other BD thing.

    The sad part for a son turning 18; under Federal law is required to register with the Selective Service within 30 days of his birthday. Significant part of life as the teenage male enters manhood.

      Yeah, I know. I'm not happy about that at all. I'm even getting calls from the service trying to recruit my son.

      Caller ID shows the call as US Govt, so now I just don't answer it.
