Apple unveils iPad

submitted on January 27, 2010 by mooncow728 in "Products / Gadgets"
The iPad has a 9.7-inch touch screen, is a half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds and comes with 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of flash memory storage. The basic iPad models will cost $499, $599 and $699, depending on the storage size.

All models have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity built in. Jobs said the device has a battery that lasts 10 hours and can sit for a month on standby without needing a charge.

Apple will also sell a version with pay-as-you-go data plans from AT&T in the U.S. Two tiers of data plan will be available without contracts: $14.99 per month for 250 megabytes of data, or $29.99 for unlimited data usage.

Arrow If you want Wifi + 3G then it will cost $130 extra each model.

Also it can be used with any carrier since the device is unlocked ( 3g version). Unsure how other carrier are going to put the pricing on this one

Wonder if other carriers would give you only a data plan?

While the iPad is unlocked currently only plans with AT&T exist. It can be supported on most other carriers But it will not work on T-Mobiles 3G network in the US.

It looks like a supersized iPhone, can do almost all the same things, and can sync to a Mac via USB.
It has a calendar, Web and email clients, and can run most existing iPhone apps.

But included in the launch was also the unveiling of a new e-book reading app called iBooks, that lets users buy and download electronic books from (you guessed it) Apple's new iBookstore (books seem to cost $8-$15). Let's see if that competes well with the other e-book readers, some of them offer free reading material....

The iPad supports ePub so it also supports free reading materials.

And I'd compare more to a large iPod Touch not iPhone, as there is no phone features nor camera/video camera.

I'll write a review on Buxr once it comes out. What should I get the 3G or the WiFi one? It is kind of confusing, but I think the 3G one comes with GPS.

Wifi has a Maps based feature as well like the iPod Touch, but its not as accurate as the GPS on an iPhone for instance. So the wifi iPad would also have that function. Just not as accurate as the 3G model.

Just noticed a limitation while reading the review at http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_.....ldzphcHBs.
The iPad's operating software is based on that of the iPhone, so it, too, does not support Flash animation. This means you can't watch videos on some Web sites like Hulu — a big negative for something with such a pretty screen.
