Apple To Give Press A Sneak Peak At iPhone 4.0

Posted on 04/08/10 at 1:55pm by Ed Liston
Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is holding a press-only event at its Cupertino headquarters. The event is likely to focus on the much-anticipated iPhone 4.0 update. According to PC World, Apple was cautious about making any announcement in its invitation.

Talking with PC World, Michael Gartenberg, Altimeter Group, said, “I don't think there's a whole lot of value in speculating on any given feature at this point."Avi Greengart, research director for consumer devices at Current Analysis, said, “"It may allow a limited number of applications to run in the background, or, more likely, allow specific processes to run in the background.”

    Notable new features for users ("tentpoles" are in bold):

    * Multitasking.
    * Spell check (like on the iPad).
    * Bluetooth keyboard support (again, on the iPad).
    * User-defined wallpaper (a jailbreak favorite).
    * Tap to focus when recording video, just like with photos, and a 5x digital zoom for the camera.
    * Playlist creation and nested playlists.
    * App folders for sorting apps! You can even put an app folder in the dock.
    * Enhanced Mail! You can have a merged inbox view, switch between inboxes quickly, and sync to more than one Exchange account. There's also threaded messaging (at last!) and in-app attachment viewing.
    * iBooks, just like on iPad, only smaller. You can wirelessly sync books between platforms, a la Kindle.
    * Enterprise features, including remote device management and wireless app distribution.
    * Game Center. It's like Xbox Live, but for iPhone games. Includes achievements, leaderboards, and match making. It will be available as a "developer preview," and out for consumers later this year.

    Noteworthy to list this as well... (D*** you Apple)

    iPhone OS 4 Compatibility

    iPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second- and third-generation iPod touch this summer, and with iPad in the fall. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).
