Apple applies for patent to kill jailbroken devices

submitted on August 23, 2010 by siggy38 in "Products / Gadgets"
I knew it was a matter of time before they would do something. Sad
Apple has applied for a patent, titled "Systems and Methods for Identifying Unauthorized Users of an Electronic Device," that covers a series of security measures to automatically protect devices from thieves and other "unauthorized users." Unauthorized users apparently applies to those who engage in jailbreaking, which allows devices to run apps not approved by the company producing the operating system--such as Apple, the main target of such bypasses.

Its a little pointless now, as the Supreme court says it is legal now. And this patent was applied for back in early '09.

Incidentally I believe this was filed around the time of the 3GS jailbreak which had a "virus" which changed your wall paper automatically unless you changed your root password.
