Any Advice from Frugal Friends?

submitted on July 11, 2010 by sandyshore in "Member's Lounge"
Any advice, tips or warnings would be welcome. I have to replace the roof on my house and I could use any experience, advice, warnings or information you may have on obtaining the best quality for my money. This is probably the most expensive purchase I've made since refinancing my house during my divorce over 15 years ago and I'm not well informed enough on the subject.

Also, please don't vote on this topic, I'm just looking for some sound wisdom that can be shared.

Get multiple written estimates from licensed and bonded contractors. Check references as well. Do not pay until the job is done. I have not replaced a roof specifically--just relaying common sense advice when dealing with a contractor.

I'd also ask your neighbors or people you trust that have recently used contractors. Referrals are generally reliable. Check Angie's List, too. Check with the BBB in your area about complaints, if any, on any contractor you consider using.
