Android users overtaking iPhone users in U.S.

submitted on December 4, 2010 by HouTex in "Products / Gadgets"
This news should increase the available Android apps! Big Grin

According to a comScore report http://comscore.com/Press_Even.....rket_Share , Android was already leading in sales, and now it almost matches iPhones in overall users. There was a massive Android sales jump in the 3-month period ending in October. During that time, the share of Android users rose sharply from 17 to 23.5 percent, while the iPhone share rose less than 1%, from 23.8 to 24.6 percent. At this rate, Android is expected to pass iPhone in the current quarter. Eeek

However, if Apple introduces a Verizon-flavored iPhone in January as expected, the tables could turn.
At the moment, Blackberry is still in the lead, but lost 3.5% share.

I'm not surprised. Anything is better than being on the AT&T network with the iPhone.

I don't have a smartphone but my regular cell works great on AT&T. No dropped calls, strong signal. There are a few areas of no service in a nearby town though.

I'm really excited about the Android OS and am seriously thinking about getting a Samsung Intercept through Virgin Mobile. VM has plans with unlimited web access and no contract. The phone is a little pricey, but will pay for itself since I don't talk on my cell phone that often.

Wow! 300 minutes per month and unlimited data for just $25/month with no contract on Virgin Mobile. What is the trick?

I guess coverage is not available everywhere, their service is through Sprint. http://www.virginmobileusa.com.....e-coverage

Does this mean a Virgin Mobile phone will work everywhere a Sprint phone works?

Another thing, the 3G coverage on the map is supposed to be shown with orange color. I see none other than along the highways. Do I miss something or is it really that bad?

There aren't any catches as far as I can tell. I've been using and have been very satisfied with VM for more than a few years now.

Do Virgin Mobile phones come locked to this one service provider? As far as I know Sprint uses CDMA so you surely can't use it on ATT or tMobile but can you at least move to Verizon? My concern is that I will shell out over $200 for the phone, will not like the service, and will be stuck with a phone I can't use anywhere else

Root the phone. I think that would unlock it to work on a VZW.
