Amazon buying Diapers.com and Soap.com for $540 mln

Amazon.com, the online retail giant, is close to an agreement to buy Quidsi Inc, the parent company of Diapers.com and Soap.com, Bloomberg said in a report, citing people familiar with the matter.

The $540-million deal is expected to be announced as early as today, the report said.

The deal would be the latest in a string of 'exclusive markets' deal for Amazon, which initially began as an online bookstore and later expanded its offerings to include DVDs, CDs and other music, movie and gaming paraphernalia.

Not a surprise as Amazon has already stolen my business with the amazing savings possible with Amazon Mom, Subscribe & Save, and 20% off coupons I've been able to find in Parenting / Parents magazines. The last box of 140 count diapers I purchased only cost $18.99.

Is it a sign Amazon has too much cash at hand? Zappos, Woot and now Diapers.com... Amazon keeps these companies independent after the acquisition. Why even bother?

I think I found the answer:

In so doing, the giant online retailer looks set to fend off its most convincing challenger in years. Buying Diapers.com’s operator will keep it away from Walmart, which was reportedly interested — arguably worth the price by itself.

I use Diapers.com for all my son's diapers (and toys, food, etc, etc) and love that I can pay with paypal. I can't use paypal with Amazon. Hopefully nothing will change to Diapers.com.

I don't think that the savings can really be beat with Amazon though. Might be worth skipping the Paypal convenience. As I stated earlier, I saved a lot on my last order. Paid only 18.99 for diapers that were priced at about $40.
