Dang I was really hoping mine was recalled. I've had nothing but problems since I bought it 2 years ago. Just recently it decided that it will only read the hard drive and dvd drive when it wants to. The card reader only reads SDHC cards when it wants too also. I was thinking that maybe it was just overheating and frying wires but my model number isn't listed and my SN sticker is too worn to read. Darn.
Have you searched online forums about your problems and/or contacted Acer? Maybe they haven't recalled for those issues yet, and might do something for you. Doesn't hurt to ask, you never know if they will make good anyway. We had an Epson printer problem (design flaw) after the warranty ended and the company still took care of it. They sent us a prepaid shipping label to send it in for repair (we knew from the forums that the problem couldn't be repaired) and then they sent us a new replacement, a newer model. (Actually it was an all-in-one.)
Try "flashing the BIOS", it might possibly help these issues, but it certainly can't hurt. Its a long-shot, as I'm not in the habit of diagnosing computer issues unless the computer is in front of me, so its hard to say what the problem might be caused by. However, if done correctly it cannot make the issues any worse than they are now.
If you don't know what that is, find somebody who does, and who knows what they are doing.
Thanks guys. @ HouTex- I thought about that but my one of my kids spilled something in it long after I started having the problem. I figure if they do try to fix it that they will see that and say it's my fault.@ solstice- Tried that already to no avail.@redsoxrokk- Sometimes that happens but sometimes the computer randomly crashes due to not being able to read the hard drive. It's weird but if I push on the IDE connector while it's booting or after it crashes it will load up no problem. I've found other people with this same problem and they all have acer laptops. I got it real cheap since it was one of the last laptops that used the IDE versus the SATA connectors so I can't complain too much but man I really wish they would recall this one.
The question then is which end of the IDE connection is having issues, as it sounds like a physical rather than software/driver issue with the hard drive.
Is it the connection on the hard drive end or the laptop end?
If its the hard drive end, you could duplicate the entire drive onto a new hard drive, and switch it out. Once again, this might be related to your other issues since the drivers for the other devices are located on the hard drive. (They may only be working intermittently since you don't always have a good connection on the hard drive.)
If its the connection on the laptop end, in my opinion its probably not worth the time, effort, and money to fix. However, that would be dependent the cost of replacement, whether or not you can do that yourself, and how much you even care about that laptop anymore.

See I was trying to figure that part out myself. I'm thinking it's probably on the laptop end based upon that it's the hard drive, dvd drive, and the sd slot. Seems to be a wiring issue. I tried to open it up and found out I have 1 single stripped screw right in the middle that is so bad that it won't come out. This was the first time I've ever tried to open it so I don't know. I just really wish they would recall mine too. It's to the point though that it is no longer portable because any slight movement makes it not read the hard drive. I would happily take a hammer to it but I don't think my husband would be too pleased.
