A way to make free calls from your cell phone

submitted on February 27, 2011 by YanBz in "Products / Gadgets"
It involves Google Voice, works with Verizon and AT&T, and requires you to dial a bit more than just the desired phone number. The prize - you get to call any number in the US for free, yes completely free.

I tried doing this with T-mobile about a year back. It worked in the beginning when GV kept the same number sending and receiving. But soon they scrambled the numbers when you are calling out. My friends would not receive a call from my GV number but instead some 804 area code number. Like I said - it worked in the beginning and I hardly used by minutes but later -- got a big bill. I checked the phone bill and noticed calls going out from GV were not from the GV #.

Make sure you experiment this feature before totally relying on it.

I understand what you are saying, but shouldn't the outgoing calls still be free for you since you always call the same number (your GV number) to make a call?

Well - that;s what I assumed but when my friends received the call - they said that number showed up as a difference number. When I checked my bill - they were right. The outgoing number was showing up differently than my GV. As a result of that all my minutes got used up ( which I thought would not happen).

That's why I said - experiment this feature - check your phone bill to see which number is showing up and then proceed.

When I dial a number, it eats my minutes, regardless. I do use GV at home and save a bundle!

According to the article, you need to be on one of those "Friends" plans where you get to call free to any of several pre-configured numbers
