7 Tips for Reducing Food Waste

submitted on January 25, 2011 by psplove in "Member's Lounge"
One of the worst things that can happen in your kitchen is opening up your fridge and finding rotting or rotted produce, spoiled milk, moldy cheese or some other food that's long gone. We don't mean to waste food but it inevitably happens. Here are some tips from Money Crashers for saving that food and your money:

1. Breakfast Doesn’t Have to Be Breakfast
2. Make a Smoothie
3. Use your Freezer
4. Keep ‘em Separated
5. Revive Stale Cereal
6. Don’t Buy in Bulk
7. Make a New Dish

if you have a fruit or veggie that's ripening faster than the others, be sure to separate it from the group. The fumes released from that produce quickens the ripening process of the others.

I think there is no better way than planning your purchases. Always check your fridge before going grocery shopping, prepare a shopping list of things you need and stick to it

#3 is a good tip and will hopefully help my family when the new baby boy get here. We're stocking up on freezer meals and we currently have about a months worth of dinners.

    8. Give to your son's bottomless pit friend when he comes over to play the entire weekend. He says, "Can I have a snack?" every 1/2 hr so we clean out our "about to go" items this way while saving the good stuff and $ too! teehee! Amused
