Debit is now the preferred payment type in most point-of-sale locations, beating cash, credit cards and checks, but using a debit card online can work against you.

Rental or security deposits
Restaurants and bars
Regular payments.
Wi-Fi hot spots
Any retail outlet where you choose the "credit" option

Wow, thanks! I use my debit for everything, especially with online purchases, and this opened my eyes.

Not so sure about #4 - WiFi hotspots because if the merchant is using a standalone card terminal with an encrypted PIN pad then information would be kept safe. However, if the terminal has been compromised as some have at various stores (e.g. Aldi) then hackers could be harvesting card/PIN #s. With that said, I always try to use my card as credit instead of debit just to be safe.
