The Time is Right to Buy a Nook or a Fire!

fire-vs-nookIf you’re in the market for a tablet reader this year, you can’t go wrong with one of the 2 hottest new devices on the market. According to the Consumer Electronics Association, tablets are the most desirable technology gifts this holiday — more popular than laptops, TVs, e-readers, and even video game consoles. The 7″ Nook Tablet from Barnes and Noble and the Amazon Kindle Fire are tablet-like color touchscreen devices that can also browse the Web, access e-mail and social networks, stream video programming, and load popular games.

Once you make a choice, though, you’re locked into a platform for ebooks unique to each device. The screen resolution for both are identical and equally good for reading. While Amazon has a larger number of books available, the Nook has an edge with interactive children’s books and the ability to record narration with the built-in microphone. Both devices support Wi-Fi connectivity and lack Bluetooth or GPS. The Nook only allows 1 GB of the 16 GB storage for user content, but expandable MicroSD storage up to 32 GB offers additional space for content that can be accessed offline. As long as you have Wi-Fi connectivity, you can access all of your Amazon content from the free Cloud Drive without loading it directly onto the Fire.

Easy Tips to Winterize Your Car

winterize_carNow that winter weather is upon us, it’s time to winterize your car. Extreme changes in temperature are very hard on your car, and you definitely don’t want to get stranded in the cold. These are easy tips to ensure that you will have a safe winter driving season.

Fluids

  • Check your antifreeze, the fluid in your radiator should be close to a 50-50 mixture of coolant and water. Since water will freeze at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, adding coolant lowers the temperature at which the contents of your radiator will freeze to as low as -34 degrees F, keeping it circulating in very cold weather. Test the mixture and add coolant as necessary.
  • Oil gets thicker in cold weather, and if it’s too thick it won’t do a good job of keeping your engine lubricated. Check your owner’s manual to choose the right viscosity for your car. Switch from a thicker viscosity oil in the summer months to a thinner grade oil in the winter for easier starting. Synthetic oil is less susceptible to extreme temperature changes.
  • Check your other fluids, making sure they’re full. Use windshield washer fluid with deicer in it, because plain water will freeze.

2011 Holiday Shopping Tips and Shipping Deadlines

holiday_shippingAre you done with your holiday shopping, or have you been putting it off for the last minute? The polls show that 32 percent of US shoppers made their purchases in November. This is more than last year, but still a relatively small fraction and the chances are you may be one of the procrastinators still shopping.

Maybe you have budget constraints, hate shopping, or simply enjoy the thrill of finding those last-minute bargains, whatever the reason is we are here to help you make sure your Christmas gifts come on time for the holiday. Please read these quick shopping tips and then scroll down for the round up of shipping deadlines from several popular merchants.

Good prices abound, but not everything is a good deal

  1. In general, although their stock is plentiful now, Christmas decorations, paper goods, and calendars reach their lowest prices after the holidays and through January.
  2. Watches and jewelry don’t have the best discounts either, and are usually excluded from department store coupon offers.
  3. Most of the heavily-discounted electronics and HDTVs advertised this month are off-brands.  Look for major brand price cuts after the holidays and into February.
  4. Laptop deals are usually not very good in December, with one exception – the 17-inch desktop replacement prices are dropping fast. That’s probably because the hot items everyone wants this year are tablets and smart phones.
  5. Wait until after the holidays to get the best deals on linens and towels, those go on sale in January.

Black Friday Horror Stories

black-fridayMany consider Black Friday the official start to the holiday season, a time of year that is said to inspire love and sharing. Certainly this is true for a great many people, but then there are the others. There are the ones who transform themselves into human shaped lemmings, just without the convenient cliff to launch themselves off of for the sake of the rest of the species. The ones who start off the season by dispensing hate, selfishness, intolerance, and even a dash of pepper spray for good measure, all in the name of saving a few bucks. Don’t get us wrong, we here at Buxr are all about shopping deals and saving a few dollars, but sometimes that cost is too high and too fervently sought after by some, such as those who enter into a berserk enraged trance ready to do fierce and bloody battle at the prospect of a two dollar waffle maker.

A black eye for Black Friday

To this end we have assembled a series of cautionary and true tales to those looking forward to Cyber Monday, and we present them to you for your reading pleasure. What follows is a sampling of the blacker portions of this past Black Friday, for which no amount of pomp and circumstance will do them justice.
