I would really like to find a book swap site that wasn't just for US residents. Surely there is one, somewhere, that people outside the US can use.

I Have been a member of swapstyle.com.for over 2 years and find it a great site,it is run by Aussies ,but there are a lot of US people on there, there is plenty to swap, from clothes, designer and not designer, makeup, handbags ,perfume, jewellery, books, dvds and pet clothes and vintage items,i have gotten some great things from swapping ,new dresses and bags ,perfume and gold and diamond jewellery, makeup and nail polish that is soo expensive here,i personally love the site ,you only pay for postage and it is great for shopaholics,or people who impulse buy,i would recommend the site to anyone, though it does run on trust and you have to be careful who to swap with, the only problem with the site is that is has had some technical glitches lately ,but overall ,i have gotten great things and met lovely people from all over the world, take a look ,and you can sell as well for free.

There is a great site in Australia for swapping books, DVDs, CDs, and video games. It's called Aussie Swap and you can find it at www.aussieswap.com.au. The site was created by a local Melburnian. It's an awesome site... I just came across it the other day. It allows Aussies to put up a list of books, DVDs, CDs, and Video Games they have available for swap. People then request your items and you send it to them and get points. You can then use those points to request any item you want, whether it be a book, CD, DVD or Video Game. It's nice that someone here in Australia has created a site like the US sites and it's finally here, so we can start swapping our items with other Aussies.

Here in Australia we do still have a few LETS [local enterprise trading systems] operating - their peak was in the 1990's, when some LETS groups had 100 plus members.

There are job losses in Australia and bankruptcies, though if the boffins are to be believed our Australian recession is nothing like the rest of the world. [Tell that to poor people]

Opportunity shops [usually run by charities] are getting more customers, in my area Sustainable Illawarra is running free bus trips around some of the best opportunity shops.

Swapping is not so popular. There is usually never an equal exchange.

Growing your own vegetables is arousing interest, and community gardens are making a comeback.
Australia has never showed interest in allotments that one finds in the UK, perhaps because we hav e such big yards..
Whether it's reducing, reusing or recyling, I am all for it.

I just wish solar panels were cheaper - they are still out of the price range of most people, even ith a government subsidy.

Another good site is www.freecycle.org I recently became a proud owner of a free piano and bench. There are yahoo groups associated with this site and they are everywhere around the U.S. so searching just might turn one up in your area. Good luck!
