Blog Monetization and Promotion: 5 things I’ve learned this week
July 28th, 2007
We’ve been busy gearing up for the beta release of the Buxr widget. In doing so, I’ve been devouring all of the professional blogging websites I could find. Then earlier this evening it hit me — I’ve learned some great things this week, I really should write them down on paper. Well, instead of writing them down for myself and nobody else, I’ve decided to share them with our loyal Buxr readers
Here is the best of what I’ve learned this week:
From the Clean Cutt Blog:
1. Blog promotion is really blog participation! If you want people to read your blog a good place to start is to read other related blogs and make meaningful comments. Good comments will not only help build your reputation in the community, but also intrigue that comment reader to hopefully click your comment link and get to know more about you.

2. Trying new things is essential for success! People often refer to this as “thinking outside the box” or even “lateral thinking.” In reality it is simple to me; take risks and you shall be rewarded. In reality most of us already know what to do to be successful, or how to innovate, it’s just that we are simply afraid of success (or failure). If you take a look at John Chow’s success or even the Shoemoney, a good part of it is because they were not afraid to expose themselves to their audiences, and discuss anything and everything.
From Blogging Tips:
3. Google Adsense launches CPA advertising network! This is huge because it introduces affiliate marketing to the masses. Sure CJ and Linkshare have been around for years, but I would guess that most bloggers running Adsense ads are either unfamiliar with affiliate marketing or are they grossly under utilizing it. My initial impressions of it are good overall. That being said, I did notice that many of their payouts are lower than on competing networks, and also a bit troubling many of the offers are actually quite spammy. You can check it out yourself under the ‘Adsense setup’ tab of your account.
From Problogger.net:
4. Using Google Analytics to compare traffic from previous times. OK, I must confess I’ve already been using this feature of Google Analytics, but it is so powerful, I felt that I had to include in this post. Not only is Google Analytics a cool visual way of seeing your progress or lack there of, it really helps you put it all together. At a glance I can see where I’ve grown — Google referrals, direct hits, website referrals, and where I’m lacking bounce rate, time spent online, etc. Of course these stats are available without time comparison, but you don’t get the same perspective. Try it yourself, it’s very enlightening.
From Daily Blog Tips
5. 15 SEO Tips from Matt Cutts. A lot of these are common sense, but if they are coming from the horse’s mouth (no offense Matt) we should listen. A common mistake Matt mentioned, and that I see in a lot of websites and blogs doing is the non-standardization back links. If your website redirects to the “www” version of your domain then all of your backlinks should include “www” in the address. Obviously most external back links are out of your control, but you would be surprised how many sites are not standardized internally. Standardizing internal and external back links ensures a smooth flow of page rank through out your site.
